Life in Boston

I’ve always been a South Shore girl, as I grew up in Duxbury, MA. After attending college right outside of Boston, I moved to Boston and lived there for about eight years. In those years, I rented five different apartments in South Boston (Southie), the North End, and the Seaport.

In August of 2019, my boyfriend and I moved to penthouse apartment in the Seaport. We planned to spend a few years “living it up in the city” before buying a house in the suburbs. However, 2020 and COVID had different plans for us. Like many others fleeing the city, we wanted more space, a yard, and to avoid a shared elevator. We decided to speed up our moving plans and search for a home a bit sooner than we expected. Boston will always have a special place in my heart, but I was excited to start our new adventure!

Finding Scituate

Growing up in Duxbury, I knew I wanted to live by the ocean. My family is in Duxbury, and my boyfriend’s family is in Bridgewater, which made the South Shore an obvious choice. We started our house hunt all over the South Shore, but fell in love with Scituate.

Scituate is a beautiful beach town with a lot to offer including restaurants, shops, history, and an inviting community! We are big foodies, so local restaurants options were a “must have” during our search for the perfect town! Other requirements included good coffees shops, golf courses for my boyfriend, yoga studios for me, and of course a beach! Scituate checked all of our boxes. We also like that it is smack-dab in the middle of the South Shore, equidistant between Plymouth and Boston. I was familiar with Scituate from growing up in Duxbury, but there was more than enough unfamiliar terrain to explore!

We set out to find a home in Scituate in the midst of a very competitive market. Our ideal home was a turnkey house (although now I think a fixer upper that would have been fun, the grass is always greener!) with a least three bedrooms, two baths, a private backyard, central air, and office space.

Our Home

We searched online daily, and finally saw our now home listed on Realtor.com. Because we were hiding away in NH during the height of COVID in Boston, we rushed to Scituate that same day. We scheduled an evening showing that night after a busy open house. Although there were several other offers, luck was on our side as we had an accepted the very next morning. We solidified a move in date of July 2020! (Just in time to enjoy a summer at the beach!)  

Our home was built in 1939, but the previous owners did a full renovation. It is a cape style cottage with the charm and detail of an older home, but with the updated white kitchen, fresh paint, and central air conditioning of a new home – complete with a white picket fence.

As first time homeowners, we were starting from scratch when tasked with furnishing a 3 bed, 3 bath home. I have always enjoyed styling and decorating, but never invested the time (or money) to commit to furniture or decor while renting in Boston. With a more permanent residence, I knew I wanted to make our home something I would enjoy every day. While looking into furnishing and decorating our home, I found a knack (or you could say obsession) for home styling.

When we moved into our home in July, we started to explore everything that the local community had to offer. As we started finding our favorite local spots and decorating our home, I wanted to way to share my home decor, local finds, and photographs with our new community. This is when I started my Instagram page @athomesouthshore, and I have started this blog to complement my Instagram page!
